The general council meeting of Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) organised at ISBT on Tuesday passed the proposal to construct new slaughter at Aadampur Chhavani amidst protest from Congress corporators. The meeting was delayed by one hour and witnessed huge ruckus during question hour. Discussion was supposed to be made on ten listed questions, but till noon discussion could not be started.
As soon as the meeting commenced after noon, Congress started cornering the BMC over threats such as dengue, malaria and other such issues which are prevailing in the city.
The Mayor-in-Council (MiC) members created ruckus over the proposal of shifting of slaughterhouse at Aadampur Chhavani, a few kilometres from the city, which was earlier rejected by the civic body in the last general council meeting.
The Congress corporators on one hand were raising objection over the decision as why did the council waste time in the previous meeting when it was pre-planned that they will pass the new proposal of construction of abattoir. At the start of meeting, the Opposition was bent on not to pass the proposal of slaughterhouse in Adampur Chhavani area near Kankali temple and in the meantime ward no 19 Corporator of Congress party Shahwar Mansoori torned the copy of agenda and threw it over the Speaker due to which he was suspended from the rest of the proceedings for a day. Meanwhile, the Congress corproators who were irked over suspension of Mansoori started creating ruckus in the hall during which another Corporator Rafiq Qureshi manhandled security staff for which he was also suspended for half-an-hour.
Chairman Surjeet Singh Chouhan asked Congress Corproator Mansoori to sit but he kept speaking and later tossed agenda paper over him due to which he was suspended for the whole day. Later, Congress corporators boycotted the meeting. However, ward no 22 Corporator Raeesa Malik only remained present in the hall from Congress party to ask her question on appointment rules and salary of daily-wage employees appointed by civic body for 25 working days.
The most surprising thing in the meet was that the same BJP corproators who had rejected the proposal with consensus in the last meeting following ruckus outside the hall, passed it this time without seeking a debate over it. Surprisingly, the Congress corporators also failed to stage stiff resistance to the proposal thereby paving the way for construction of slaughterhouse. BMC Chairman Surjeet Singh Chouhan with the mutual consent of Congress and BJP corporators passed the proposal.
Congress Corporator Santosh Kasana has accused BJP corporators of paying politics and wasted the last session in the name of opposing the proposal. Congress corporators also alleged that the BJP corporators are paid for passing the proposal. Notably, the NGT had ordered to impose fine on the municipal corporation if it failed to construct a new slaughterhouse. Hence, the corporation is bound to construct it.
