The treatment of the bladder cancer is possible through various means. One such treatment is the surgery. There are various types of surgery available. The surgery will range from the removal of the part of the bladder to the diversion of the urine.
Urinary Bladder Cancer is cancer in the lining of the bladder. It occurs in men more frequently than women. It can be diagnosed with the help of other diagnostic techniques. It is also common that cancer may spread to the other part of the urinary tract.
Treatment for Bladder Cancer:
There are many treatments for cancer. One of them is surgery. There are many types of surgeries. The surgery is used to remove the cancerous tissue.
1. TURBT – It is a surgical procedure used to remove the cancerous tissue lying in the inner lining of the bladder. This is for those which are not invasive. During the procedure, the surgeon passes the small wire of loop through the help of cystoscope in the bladder. These loops help in burning the cancer cells with the electric current. It is performed under the regional anaesthesia. In this, the anaesthesia numbs the lower part of the body. Since the procedure is performed through the urethra, no incision or cut will be made. Along with the TURBT, the oncologist may also advise for one-time injection and cancer-killing medication. The medication will remain in the bladder for an hour and after that, it will be drained.
2. Cystectomy – It is the surgery to remove the one part of the bladder. In cystectomy, the surgeon removes only a part of the bladder. Partial Cystectomy is the option if the cancer is limited in only one part of the area. The bladder can be easily removed without harming the bladder. It is an operation to remove the entire bladder or surrounding the lymph nodes. Radial Cystectomy can be done by making a single incision or the multiple incision. In women, the radio cystectomy removes the uterus, ovaries and the vagina. It carries the risk of infection and bleeding. During the robotic surgery, the surgeon will sit at the console to look after the actions of the robot.
3. Neobladder Reconstruction – After the radical cystectomy, the surgeon creates a new way for the urine to pass. In this surgery, the surgeon will create a sphere shaped reservoir from the piece of the intestine. The reservoir called the neobladder reconstruction. The neobladder will allow you to urinate normally. In a small number of people with the neobladder have difficulty in emptying the bladder. In these case, the patient needs to use the catheter regularly.
4. Ileal Conduit – This is used for the urinary diversion. In this, a surgeon may create a tube using a piece of the intestine. This tube is known as the Ileal Conduit. The tube will run from the ureter to the urostomy bag. The tube will drain your kidneys to the outside of the body. The urostomy bag will be worn by you in the abdomen.
5. Continent Reservoir – This is also a type of urinary diversion. During this type of urinary diversion, the surgeon will create a small pouch (reservoir) to hold the urine. The small pouch is made of using the small section of the intestine. The pouch will be located inside the body. The urine will be drained from the reservoir through an opening in the abdomen. This will be done by using the catheter quite frequently.
These various surgeries may help to get rid of the urinary bladder cancer. But, it is important to consult the oncologist in time for these surgeries.
