Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common nasal disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of nocturnal breathing cessation due to upper airway collapse. This chronic disorder is affecting about 2-4% of the adult population, where the high prevalence is noticed among middle-aged men. Risk factors for this syndrome are snoring, middle age, obesity, menopause in women, hypertension, chronic nasal congestion, diabetes, asthma. A family with history of the OSA also opted to have high risk of sleep apnoea. Over the years, these apnoea’s and sleep fragmentation affected the function of different organs and systems and also altered the body metabolic balance. It mainly affected the brain and the cardio vascular system. As the disorder develops, the sleepiness becomes more dangerous, which causes fatigue and irritability during daytime. This eventually leads to find difficulty in concentrating and fall asleep at work. Cardiovascular problems also may persist. OSA with certain medications and general anaesthesia is also a concern. People with OSA sometimes may more prone to complications after surgery. In the last two decades, advances in sleep medicine and the availability of the improved diagnostic tools have led to a better recognition and treatment of the disease. The management of patients with OSA requires a multidisciplinary approach and many treatment options are currently available. One of the best treatments and the most commonly used treatment since 1980s is Positive airway pressure (PAP). Alternative options also include mandibular advancement and some of the upper airway surgical approaches.
