With modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, bone density the cases of joint problems are on the rise. The physical ability arising from pain and loss of functional capacity reduces the quality of life often leads to joint replacements.

Incidences of Joint replacement surgeries have seen an upsurge in the past 5 years. According to the recent data provided by Joint registry (ISHKS), over 35,000 total knee replacements (TKR) and over 3500 total hip replacement surgeries (THR) have been performed in India in the last 5 years.

“Osteoarthritis is the second most common rheumatologic problem and is the most frequent joint disease with a prevalence of around 40% in India. It is the form of arthritis which features the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage of one or more joints. Cartilage is protein like substance which acts as cushion in between the joints. Although osteoarthritis can affect any joint, this disorder commonly affects hands, knees, hips and spine. Pain arising from the disease affects an individual’s day to day activities and increase the risk of further morbidities.” Said Dr S.S Sibia, Director, Sibia Medical Centre, Ludhiana

But with the advent of technology, cytotron, latest device based on Rotational Field Quantum Magnetic Resonance (RFQMR) has replaced the need of undergoing invasive joint replacement surgeries.

“The device utilizes highly electronic magnetic beams in the radio spectrum controlled by a computer and guided by MRI. The beams are precisely controlled and focused onto tissues to alter the cell membrane potential of the target tissue cells which in turn stimulates cartilage growth in case of degenerative disease such as osteoarthritis. The treatment is minimally invasive, painless and doesn’t have any side effects. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Cytotron is very effective in curing certain conditions such as damaged knee by regenerating cartilage tissues, helps in relieving chronic pain and thus many knees have been saved from knee replacement surgery.” Added Dr Sibia

Cytotron is commercially available in India now. It is well accepted by aware doctors and surgeons across the country.
