With the rapidly growing advancements in the field of neurosciences, minimally invasive surgeries have completely changes the treatment module even for the most complex spinal complications.



In order to highlight the same and aware public about the latest and advanced treatment methods, India’s leading healthcare provider, Max Super specialty Hospital, Vaishali, organized a patient centric awareness session today. The session highlighted the cases of various patients who had suffered some form of spinal complications and have now completely been benefited with these advanced treatment methods.



“While many patients fear the complications of open and traditional surgeries, but with recent advancements, spinal surgeries have become minimally invasive and 100% safe with minimal blood loss and quicker recovery. Keyhole surgeries include ‘Micro-endoscopic decompression’ surgery wherein an incision is made around 1.5 cm to 2 cm without damaging the adjacent soft tissues. While the cosmetic appeal is one of the major advantages, there is no trauma to the bone or muscles, keeping the contours well intact and the patient recovery time are also minimal in comparison to an open surgery.” Said Dr Manish Vaish, Director- Neuro Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali.



The session also highlighted the cases of the patients who underwent spinal surgeries to lead a better quality of life. Present on the occasion were 42 year old Pooja Gagneja, 64 year old Ram Singh and 43 year old Amit Gupta.



Patient Pooja who had been suffering from lower back pain that radiated to both the limbs until knees for over two years underwent keyhole decompression surgery successfully after her MRI scans revealed eight weak spots in her spinal cord. While she had been fearing surgery for over a year, decided to bare the pain until she came to know about the minimally invasive procedure. Post operatively she is leading a better quality of life. Similar was the case with 64 year old Ram Singh, who had been suffering from excruciating lower back pain for over 5 years and recently underwent this procedure.



Patient Amit Gupta who had been suffering from Grade 2 Spondylitis with PIVD, that had caused severe back pain and numbness in his left limb. Detailed investigations revealed a nerve compression in his vertebrae that cased the pain and was suggested for a spinal fusion surgery.



“Patient Amit was successfully treated with another path-breaking technique -spinal fusion surgery (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)) with the usage of spinal navigation technique that allows the surgeons to make use of image guidance in real time to precisely locate the operation site. This type of surgery is highly beneficial to minimize the pain and nerve irritation and patients suffering from spondylitis, Disc Herniation, or PIVD (prolapsed disc). As the procedure involves preventive and safe measures, it is one of the safe and sound surgeries. The materials used along with the screws are flexible and does not cause rigidity of the spine with time thereby maintaining its mobility.” He added.
