India ranks in top countries when it comes to unhealthy menstrual cycle. Irregular periods is the major health concern and if untreated leads to other health issues such as infertility, PCOS, Anemia, weight loss emotional imbalance and etc. Over 68% women have severe period-related symptoms such as cramps, tiredness, and bloating. Almost all users report having mood swings at some point in their cycle.

According to a survey done in IT Park, Chandigarh, about 500 women showed that the most common health problem in most of the females was of irregular periods. Most of the patients were in the age groupof 22-30 and 40% of females had irregular periods.

According to Dr Shilva, Senior Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology Paras Bliss Panchkula, “Having irregular periods means that there is a variation in the number of days you have your period or if period comes late or even skips a few months. Delaying of periods does not mean that something serious is going on but, it can be stressful. Periods usually start during puberty, between the ages of 10 and 16 years, and they continue until menopause, when a woman is 45- to 55-years old. The normal length of a woman's menstrual cycle is 28 days, but this varies between individuals. Irregular menstruation is when the length of the cycle is more than 35 days, or if the duration varies.”

PCOS affects about one in 10 women of reproductive age, making it one of the more common hormonal abnormalities women experience during their reproductive years. Women often notice that something is wrong when they have irregular bleeding either infrequent and very light or more frequent and heavy and often excess hair growth.

Talking about the causes and the other health issues Dr Shilva says,’’ For many women, irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles may not sound like such a bad thing. But a condition that can causes irregular period polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS can present women with numerous health concerns, ranging from excess hair growth to fertility issues to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. The most common causes of irregular periods are chronic medication, stress and anxiety, puberty, menopause or hormonal pills. Stress associated with menopause in modern era can release stress hormones which can disrupt the production of estrogen and causes missed periods.

Many PCOS patients experience fertility problems simply because they can't produce an egg for fertilization every month. They have an increased risk of diabetes, with about 30 percent of PCOS patients suffering from pre-diabetes or insulin insensitivity and 10 percent having type II diabetes. And PCOS patients may be at an increased risk for endometrial cancer, the cancer of the lining of the uterus”

An irregular cycle can also make it more difficult to get pregnant, especially if you’re not ovulating every month. Women with irregular periods who are trying to have a baby are sometimes prescribed fertility drugs to increase ovulation

Talking about the preventive measures and treatment Dr Shilva says “Irregular periods that occur during puberty or as the woman approaches menopause do not usually need treatment. If irregular bleeding is due to contraception, and it continues for several months, the woman should concern a doctor. In cases of PCOS, overweight, or obesity losing weight may help stabilize menstruation cycle. Meditation Yoga and healthy lifestyle can maintain your irregular cycle. Psychological therapy may help if emotional stress, an eating disorder, or sudden weight loss have triggered irregular periods.”
