There has been an alarming rise in the number of people suffering from fatty liver disease. Prolonged conditions without treatment leads to liver cirrhosis or even liver cancer. Last year in India, Liver cancer accounted for nearly 7% of all cancer related deaths in India and was the fourth most common cause of cancer related death.

Dr Rinkesh Bansal-Additional Director-Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Gurugram Said "Prevalence of ailments related to the liver, pancreas -such as gastrointestinal, fatty liver and hepatitis is increasing at an alarming rate, most of which are preventable and treatable if diagnosed in the early stages. The patient begins to show symptoms only when over 70% of the liver has become dysfunctional. Therefore, the diagnosis of early-stage liver disease and treatment with correct strategies is pivotal to treat it successfully if irreversible liver damage has not yet occurred. Live donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) in recent times have become a boon & offer long-term survival even in end stage liver disease patients. It is important to note that there is a huge burden of liver diseases in our country, and for those who develop end-stage liver disease, the only definitive treatment is liver transplant. However, there is a huge scarcity of brain-dead organ donors in our country due to lack of awareness. In such circumstances, living related organ liver donor remains the only feasible option."

Common blood disorders in children include Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Aplastic Anaemia, Leukemias (blood cancers). The advancement in BMT has made the treatment of these diseases very effective and safe. In Thalassemia, BMT is the only curative treatment. Only 20 to 30 percent of patients in India get matched related or unrelated donors. But due to the refinement of techniques of half - matched transplantation, parents or half-matched siblings are able to become the donors and this eliminates the waiting time for the ones in immediate need of bone marrow transplants. In case of thalassemia, BMT can save the patient from life-long transfusions. BMT is also the recommended choice of treatment over immunosuppressant medicines in aplastic anaemia (bone marrow failure) in children, with a very high success rate close to 90 percent.

Speaking about the advancements in Bone Marrow Transplant Procedures Dr Santosh-Senior Consultant- Bone Marrow Transplant from Fortis Hospital Gurugram said "With advancements made in the field of hematology and stem cell transplantation, Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT) is emerging as the best options for even incurable and potentially fatal disorders. Bone marrow is the soft fatty tissue inside the bones that proliferates into blood cells. The procedure is classified into two types – Allogeneic (from related or unrelated donors) and Autologous (where stem cells are taken from a patient's own body). During a typical BMT, the damaged or destroyed bone marrow needs to be replaced with healthy ones and the major restricting factor lies in the matching of the donor cells. But with recent advancements, haploidentical transplantations where if the donor's tissue matches 50% or more half identical, the procedure can be successfully done. This procedure has virtually eliminated the waiting period for many patients awaiting a BMT on an urgent basis as parents and siblings are always half-match."

With the launch of the OPD services, patients across age groups and all walks of life can avail the best consultation and treatment in Gwalior and nearby regions, without the inconvenience of travelling to another city. The facility will provide expert advice and treatment related to liver, pancreas, biliary ailments and blood disorders like Acute Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, Aplastic Anaemia, Thalassemia Major, Sickle Cell Disease and several other cancers.
